Recovering from stop sign on boot screen
\nFor those who are stuck on the grey boot screen, here\u2019s how you get back into OS X:<\/p>\n

  • Step 1: Boot recovery mode by holding Cmd+R during boot<\/li>\n
  • Step 2: Open the Terminal from the menu bar<\/li>\n
  • Step 3: Run this command:<\/li>\n

    nvram boot-args
    \nDoes it say \u201ckext-dev-mode=1\u2033? if so, you can skip to Step 6. If it says \u201cerror getting variable\u201d, continue with these steps:<\/p>\n

  • Step 4: Run this command:<\/li>\n

    nvram boot-args=kext-dev-mode=1<\/p>\n

  • Step 5: Reboot back in to Recovery Mode again<\/li>\n
  • Step 6: Run these commands, replacing Your Disk Name with the name of your Mac disk (partition). <\/li>\n

    You can type ls \/Volumes to get a list of volumes. Note the quotes around the disk path and that there should be no \/ before System.<\/p>\n

    cd “\/Volumes\/Your Disk Name”
    \ntouch System\/Library\/Extensions
    \nkextcache -prelinked-kernel System\/Library\/Caches\/com.apple.kext.caches\/Startup\/kernelcache -K System\/Library\/Kernels\/kernel System\/Library\/Extensions <\/p>\n

  • Step 6: Wait until it finishes (can take as long as 5-10 minutes, don\u2019t abort it) and reboot.<\/li>\n<\/blockquote>\n
